BC FORUM Recommended Event

Name of Event:

National Day of Mourning - Victoria, BC

Hosted by the BC Federation of Labour and the Victoria Labour Council

When:

Friday, April 28, 2017 starting with Memorial Procession at 10:30 am and Ceremony at 11:00 am

Where:

Memorial Procession starts at Victoria Conference Centre and Ceremony takes place on the grounds of the BC Legislature, Victoria, BC. Volunteer pallbearers will be carrying 100 cardboard caskets in honour of the 20,000 workers who haven killed at work since the Workmens Compensation Act came into effect on January 1, 2017, more than one hundred years ago.

MEMORIAL PROCESSION

The memorial procession will begin on Humboldt St. behind the Victoria Conference Centre, head west to Government St. and north to the BC Legislature.

The route is approximately 550 m long (10 min walk).

The roads will not be barricaded. The police will maintain a rolling road closure along the procession route.

Coordinators and marshals will be wearing high visibility vests and will be available to answer questions and provide instruction during the procession.

The caskets will be placed in a designated area at the BC Legislature—please follow the direction of the marshals.

To participate in the memorial procession, please follow the instructions below. Please allow ample time to find parking—see parking information below.

Muster time: 10:00 AM – All participants (except CUPE BC convention delegates.)

Muster location: Victoria Conference Centre, rear access off the SW corner of Humboldt St. and Douglas St.

Marshals: Those that are interested in being a marshal, please see a coordinator at the muster location between 9:30 AM and 10:00 AM (except CUPE BC delegates.)

Pallbearers: Those that are interested in carrying a casket or a rose in the procession, please see a coordinator at the muster location between 9:30 and 10:00 AM (except CUPE BC delegates.)

What to bring: Union flags, banners, or placards are acceptable. Weather appropriate attire—expect wind and rain.

CUPE BC Delegates: Delegates will be dismissed at 10:30 am and provided with directions to the muster point. Those signed up as a marshal or pallbearer, please find a coordinator.

Procession start time: 10:30 AM

 

CEREMONY
The ceremony will be held in front of the BC Legislature building once the entire procession reaches the grounds. Those not participating in the procession can muster at this location.

The ceremony will be emceed by Mike Eso, President of the Victoria Labour Council and will include brief speeches from the following:

• Irene Lanzinger, President, BC Federation of Labour

• Barb Byers, Secretary Treasurer, Canadian Labour Congress

• Paul Faoro, President, CUPE BC

• Deb Bickerson, HEU member injured in a workplace violent incident.

• Ivor Bremner, IBEW Local 230 member diagnosed with an asbestos-related disease.

 

Start time: 11:00 AM

End time: 11:45 AM

(Please note that the times provided are estimates.)

 

PARKING

Please allow ample time to find parking.

Please note that the Victoria Conference Center will not be providing parking for the Day of Mourning event.

The two nearest public parking lots operated by the City of Victoria are as follows:

Wharf Street Parking Lot: This surface parking lot contains 150 stalls and is located next to Harbour Air below Wharf Street.

It is an approximately 450m (10 min walk; 5 min drive) to the memorial procession muster point from this lot and approximately 650m (15 min walk; 5 min drive) from the BC Legislature.

Rates: $2.25 per hour /$13.50 per day

Royal Theatre Lot: This surface parking lot contains 38 stalls and is located behind the Royal Theatre.

It is an approximately 400m (10 min walk; 5 min drive) to the memorial procession muster point from this lot and approximately 900m (20 min walk; 10 min drive) from the BC Legislature.

Rates: $2.25 per hour/$13.50 per day
