BC FORUM - Federal Election 2019

Away from home during Federal Election 2019?

ELECTION DAY IS MONDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2019. Advance voting takes place on Friday October 11, Saturday October 12, Sunday October 13, and Monday October 14.

Electors who will be away from their electoral district during an election can apply to vote by special ballot, once an election has been called.

If you will be leaving after the election has been called, you have the option of voting in person at any local Elections Canada office before you leave. Otherwise, you can also apply to vote by mail from anywhere in the world.

A)  By going to any local Elections Canada office

You will be provided with an application form, which you can complete and submit to the Returning Officer. The application will be processed, and, if it is approved, you will be given a special ballot voting kit. You then have the option of completing and submitting the ballot immediately, or returning it by mail at a later date.

It is important to note that you can find the contact information for the nearest local Elections Canada office online. This information will be available once an election has been called.

You will have to provide proof of identity and address with your application. We recommend that you check what type of identification documents you can provide with your application.

The deadline for registering to vote by special ballot at a local Elections Canada office is 6 p.m., local time, on the Tuesday (OCTOBER 15, 2019) before election day.

If you choose to return your ballot by mail, refer to the instructions included within.

B) By applying online, by fax or by mail

 We recommend that electors complete the online application.

 You can also obtain an application:

- by downloading the PDF form and printing it from Elections Canada’s website;

- at any Canadian embassy, high commission or consulate.

Please make sure to read the instructions carefully, to avoid delays in the processing of your application. Once your application has been approved, a special ballot voting kit will be sent to the mailing address provided in your application.

Please note that you will have to provide proof of identity and address with your application. We recommend that you check what type of identification documents you can provide with your application. Options 1 & 2 apply in this scenario.

The deadline to register this way to vote by special ballot is 6 p.m., Eastern time, on the Tuesday (OCTOBER 15, 2019) before election day.

You must ensure to return your completed ballot to Elections Canada in Ottawa by 6 p.m., on election day. By law, ballots received after the deadline cannot be counted.
