Celebrating International Women's Day March 8, 2010 - A Day of Remembrance What does this day passionately mean to me? Firstly, it reminds me of the incredible journey and significant accomplishments women have made when providing leadership and promoting the role of women that continually progress and strive to ensure equality and social justice for all people. Once again I salute the women of the world on INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY – March 8, 2010. Another special and important remembrance to me personally, is that on MARCH 8, 1974, the B.C. Government Employees’ Association was succeeded by the B.C. Government Employees’ Union, that won the right to represent and bargain for government employees in British Columbia, on matters of wages, pensions and benefits. As a clerical worker, I recall attending meetings to look at proposals that would provide improvement in hours of work, benefits, and working conditions; acknowledging that it would not happen overnight. I personally, owe a great deal of gratitude to former BCGEU President Norman Richards, General Secretary John Fryer and the dedication of Provincial Executive members, Staff Reps and support staff for the constant demands and intrusions in their personal lives, because of time spent negotiating that first Master Agreement. Today, March 8, 2010, I pay tribute to those sisters and brothers who have continued to provide commitment and accomplishment to the members and retirees of the BCGEU.
