Changes at the Labour Relations Board and
Employment Standards Tribunal

Jacquie de Aguayo has been appointed acting chair of the BC Labour Relations Board and the Employment Standards Tribunal, Labour Minister Harry Bains announced today, as government begins a search to replace outgoing chair Brent Mullin.

Brent Mullin’s appointment to the two boards was rescinded on Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2017.

“I’d like to thank Mr. Mullin for 16 years of service to the people of the province, especially the labour relations community,” Bains said.

De Aguayo is appointed as acting chair for both boards for up to six months while the Board Resourcing and Development Office leads a broad and comprehensive search to fill the position. De Aguayo was appointed to the Labour Relations Board in March 2014, where she has since served as vice-chair and registrar.

In addition to a posting for a new chair, the Labour Relations Board will be seeking to replace Peter Archibald, who retired as a vice-chair in July 2017. The intention is to maintain the total number of appointments at the board to eight, with four from employers and four from the trade-union movement.

The Labour Relations Board is an independent administrative tribunal with the mandate to mediate and resolve disputes related to unionized workplaces under the Labour Relations Code. The Employment Standards Tribunal conducts out-of-court hearings of appeals and decisions made by the Employment Standards Branch, which is established under the Employment Standards Act. Combined, these mechanisms provide workers and employers the ability to resolve workplace disputes in a fair and efficient manner.
